The Cork Alliance Centre was thrilled and privileged to be part of the second Feminist Walk of Cork , entitled 'Women, Confinement and Social Justice'.
This project was initiated in 2021 by UCC staff and students in partnership with community organisations in Cork. Led by Professor Maggie O’Neill, "A Feminist Walk of Cork" was created in collaboration with Master's students in Women’s Studies and undergraduate students in Sociology, Criminology, and History at UCC College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences. They acknowledged the importance of amplifying women's voices and experiences in the city's public narrative.
The initial walk examined the impact of women in Cork on art, culture, and society. This subsequent walk expanded their research to investigate the role of women and female-led organisations in addressing sexual and social inequalities and in creating safer and fairer societies for all.
Feminist Walk of Cork 2 explores: the rich contributions of Traveller women and their leadership in the ongoing development of Traveller rights (TVG and Traveller Women’s Network), women’s experiences of the criminal justice system (Cork Alliance), sexual and intimate partner violence (Sexual Violence Centre Cork), the importance of sexual health for all and addressing sexual inequalities (Sexual Health Centre and Gender Rebels) including justice for Symphysiotomy Survivors (Survivors of Symphysiotomy), and addressing social inequalities, poverty and homelessness by providing food, support, a sense of wellbeing, and a warm welcome for all (Cork Penny Dinners). We also highlight the important strengths-based work undertaken with and for new arrival communities, in challenging racism (Cork Migrant Centre).

The public is invited to use this map as a guide for exploring the streets of Cork city. Participants on this journey will have the unique chance to uncover and appreciate the important contributions women have made to the cultural, social, and historical fabric of the city. As walkers move through the city, they will be immersed in a rich tapestry, with each stop on the map highlighting the enduring strength and determination of women throughout history. Along the route, participants will encounter various landmarks, buildings, and public spaces that have been influenced by remarkable women, each with her own tale of resilience, innovation, and impact.
